Facebook’s f8 Live Keynote

by Eric On April - 21 - 2010

The f8 Live 2010 Keynote took place in San Francisco today April 21, 2010. Nerds and web developers should all find great excitement with the new features and functionality that Facebook announced at f8 Live!

These features will definitely change every Facebook user’s online experience, and with over 400 million people you and your friends will be able to share the experience much easier!

As Nerdum continues to evolve you can bet that we plan on taking full advantage of Facebook to help our goal of uniting nerds everywhere!

So let’s get into it…

What is f8?

Well it’s part of Facebook that is bringing together the developers and entrepreneurs of the world who are building the social Web by moving fast, taking risks, and hacking traditional systems. Their goal is to connect the web socially by making it simple to do so.

What was announced today?

…we are making it so all websites can work together to build a more comprehensive map of connections and create better, more social experiences for everyone. We have redesigned Facebook Platform to offer a simple set of tools that sites around the web can use to personalize experiences and build out the graph of connections people are making.Mark Zuckerberg

Social Plug-ins:

Social plugins enable you to provide engaging social experiences to your users with just a line of HTML. Because they are hosted by Facebook, the plugins are personalized for all users who are logged into Facebook — even if the users haven’t yet signed up for your site.

  • Global Like button
  • Friends that Like your site
  • Friend’s activity on your site (Liked pages)
  • Facebook Share bar
  • oAuth (no login required / no Facebook connect needed)

Open Graph Protocol:

The Open Graph protocol enables you to integrate your web pages into the social graph. It is currently designed for web pages representing profiles of real-world things — things like movies, sports teams, celebrities, and restaurants. Once your pages become objects in the graph, users can establish connections to your pages as they do with Facebook Pages. Based on the structured data you provide via the Open Graph protocol, your pages show up richly across Facebook: in user profiles, within search results and in News Feed.

Graph API:

The new Graph API attempts to drastically simplify the way developers read and write data to Facebook. It presents a simple, consistent view of the Facebook social graph, uniformly representing objects in the graph (e.g., people, photos, events, and fan pages) and the connections between them (e.g., friend relationships, shared content, and photo tags).

Many companies have already partnered up to integrate these features into their site. So expect to see more of Facebook right on your favorite sites. Here are a few major players:

Pandora, New York Times, CNN, IMDb, ESPN, ABC, Wall Street Journal, Fandango, …and many more! See full list here.
