The Sky Puts on a Show
If you find yourself wandering outside at night this week, make sure you take the time to look up! Our solar system will be putting on quite a show for anyone that takes the time to look. This week you can expect to see a lot of shooting stars as the annual Perseid meteor shower makes its return.
You will also be able to see three planets: Venus, Mars and Saturn. The three planets will form a triangle in the Western sky with Venus being by far the brightest. Saturn and Mars may be a bit more difficult to spot without binoculars. “These three planets are destined to crowd into a relatively small area of the sky, making for a very distinctive and eye-catching formation that is sure to thrill most sky watchers,” said Joe Rao of SPACE.com.
The show will be best viewed over the next few days with August 11 through 13 being the high points. All through the night and into the early morning hours, Rao estimates you could see 60 or more meteors per hour!
