Sony Readying PSPad?

by Ryan On March - 5 - 2010

New reports suggest that Sony may be trying to go toe-to-toe with Apple with some new portable devices the company is working on. According to this article at IGN, the Wall Street Journal recently featured a piece suggesting that Sony was preparing two new gadgets: a PlayStation phone and an iPad-like tablet currently called the PSPad.

The PlayStation phone would be able to play older PlayStation or PSP titles and the PSPad is described as a “hybrid” device with “features including netbook/ebook/gaming functionality.” The PSPad would also make use of Sony’s upcoming media platform, currently known simply as Sony Online Service, which is expected to debut late this month.

This certainly makes a good amount of sense with the recent success of smart phones and the popularity of mobile gaming. Factor in declining PSP sales and a more competitive portable gaming arena and its not hard to see why Sony may be interested in pursuing some new revenue streams.

What do you think? Would you be interested to see what Sony can come up with? Or is Apple simply too much for them to handle? Fighting Microsoft on one front and Apple on another would seem like a fool’s errand for most companies, but if anyone can take it, it’s Sony.

  1. EvilPaul Said,

It is not surprising since they have already made 2 versions of a deceive that does the same thing. The Sony Mylo what a internet table a few years ago that was pretty cool but it was a niche market and Nokia had a much better internet table. I think with more powerful hardware they could pump something nice out. Here is a pic of the Mylo: http://www.mydaywillcome.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/sony_mylo_2_1.jpg
