Sony E3 2010 Press Conference Wrap Up

by Paul On June - 20 - 2010

Sony’s time came to end the major E3 conferences, could the console underdog impress? Take a read and find out.

Coming into E3, I thought Sony would have a pretty good show. They had already been showing off Killzone 3 and inFamous 2 to press before the show which are heavy hitters. They started the show with gameplay from Killzone 3, this is the first time seen to the public. The people in the audience got the treat of seeing the demo in 3D and from reports, it was very impressive. Not only were the 3D effects impressive but the look of the game overall. It seemed to have very intense moments and looks to be a lot of fun. This will be coming in February next year.

Many other games were announced that will work in 3D like Gran Turismo 5, Mortal Kombat, Crysis 2, NBA 2k11, Ghost Recon, and Tron Evolution. Sony had said games will ship with the 3D version and the normal version of the game on the same disk. This is very good for the people that don’t have a 3D tv or an older one that isn’t supported yet, like me. The Sly Cooper Collection that contains all the Sly games was announced along with a mash-up game called Heroes on the Move. This has Ratchet & Clank joining forces with Sly Cooper, Jak, and Daxter. Both games are also in 3D.

Next up Sony starts to talk about the Move, Sony’s answer to motion control. I think they did present the Move correctly, they didn’t show a ton game of ok games, just a few very good ones. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Move because I seem to only buy games on my Wii that don’t use the motion control because most don’t seem to appeal to me. Sony had an on-stage demo of a new game called Sorcery. The game seems to be Sony’s take on the world of Harry Potter. You are a sorcerer, the Move is your wand, and you cast spells and attacks using the Move. First off I think this game looks very good, great lighting and spell effects. The controls seemed to be very smooth and work well. You have tons of different types of attacks and spells you can do to fight off enemies. I may buy a Move for just this game; it looks like it could be very fun. Release window for Sorcery for is Spring 2011.

The next Move game Sony showed was Tiger Woods 2011. If it wasn’t obvious, the Move is your golf club. It seems to have a very good 1:1 movement between the Move and the golf club. You can actually swing and miss the ball which is very realistic, this game really could help your golf game. I can see how this could get frustrating for players but impressive it’s none the less. I’m not 100% sure, but I think the cheers and clapping were coming from the game and not the crowd, kind of funny if it was.

Now this is one of the parts of the show that was kind of weird. Sony started to talk about a marketing partnership with Coke. Not sure why anyone in the room needed to hear about that because I’m sure most of the people in that room and watching the show have a PS3. Even though this was odd, it let them segue into one of the most epic parts and surprises of any E3, the appearance of Kevin Butler. If you are not sure who he is, he is the main person in all of Sony’s PS3 TV ads, these have been very successful for Sony. Make sure to watch this video.

As epic as Kevin Butler was, the show had to move on. Sony explained launch details for the Move. It will be coming out on September 19 with a few different packages. The PS3 system with Sports Champions, PlayStation Eye, and the Move is $399. Just the Move is $49 for the people have have the PlayStation Eye. $30 for the Navigation controller but it is not needed, a normal PS3 controller will also work. $99 for the Sports Champions, Playstation Eye, and Move bundle. Along with this they announced some Move games like Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Socom 4, EyePet, and Echochrome ii. They also announced updates for current games like Resident Evil 5 and Heavy Rain.

We come up to another odd part of the show. They start talking about a new PSP advertising campaign. They are having someone like Kevin Butler but for the PSP named Marcus Rivers. The commercials they showed are pretty funny and hopefully help Sony out a bit. I think this is a good move just to show they care a little bit until they announce a new handheld. Hopefully they will talk about one at the Tokyo Game Show later this year. Along with this they had a montage of PSP games like God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Patapon 3, Ace Combat: Joint Assault, Invizimals, Persona 3 Portable, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.

Another big title that Sony showed off was Little Big Planet 2. We have seen some trailers showing off new stuff before but now we got some explanation. The demo levels shown were done by some of the players that had made impressive levels in the first game. The Little Big Planet 2 developers had them come to the studio and in one night, make levels for Little Big Planet 2. What they came up with was pretty impressive. The developers said the tools have been expanded so that pretty much any game that can be made in 2D, can be made in Little Big Planet 2. Someone even made an RTS, crazy!

Next they talk about PlayStation Plus. Don’t get confused like a lot of people have been, this is just a supplemental content service, not a copy of Xbox Live, neither have much in common. I don’t think Sony showed this off well or talked about it enough, they could have used the 30 minutes on advertising here. You can pay $50 a year for PlayStation Plus and get access to free games, game betas, discounts, and a few other things. That is pretty much all they said. This has potential depending on what they give you for free. If I get $100 worth of games I like for paying $50 a year, I wouldn’t mind that. We shall see how the PlayStation Plus works in the future. You can check out some more info here.

Sony now brings up some exclusive content to help persuade people to get the PS3 version of some games. The PS3 version of the new Medal of Honor will come with the classic Medal of Honor: Frontline game. The other game is Dead Space: Extraction coming with the PS3 version of Dead Space 2. Dead Space: Extraction previously was only on the Wii so I can see this helping sales a lot.

A huge surprise of E3 happened during Sony’s show. The stage goes dark and the familiar voice of GLaDOS starts to speak. She starts a countdown of when a surprise is going to happen in 3..2..1. Then Gabe Newell walks out on stage, for those who do not know about him, he is the co-founder of valve and has spoke badly of home consoles, more so the PS3. He had announced that Portal 2 was going to all systems and the PS3 version was going to have Steam support with server stored saves and auto updating. Portal 2 has some awesome new gameplay elements and co-op play. The game is shipping sometime next year.

Up next is something for MMO and Final Fantasy fans. They showed off a great looking trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV Online. Looking to be a great game, I was a huge fan of the first one, as was Ryan of Nerdum. Along with Final Fantasy, they trickled in a few other games like Pixel Junk Shooter 2, Dead Nation, DC Universe, and some other known games.

What E3 in the last 4 years would be complete without a Gran Turismo 5 trailer. The thing with this trailer is that it is the one you have been wanting for 4 years. The game looks amazing, shows off the Top Gear test track, voice work from an F1 driver, and……a release date. Trust me, I’m not messing with you. On November 2, 2010, you will finally be racing and tuning all those fancy cars. Kind of funny that the release day part of the trailer had people clapping and cheering. I know I was.

We also got a little trailer of inFamous 2. The game is looking pretty good but I know some are a little skeptical because there is a new voice actor and art director. The game still looks true to its gameplay which I know is most important.

We finally made it to the end of the show. A very long conference I must say but Sony did go out with a huge bang. This will go down as the best game announcement ever. If you don’t care about gameplay, you have to at least watch the first few minutes. A new Twisted Metal is coming, hell yea! This is what makes E3 so exciting, I was watching this live and completely clueless as were thousands of people. Even after the guys start talking in the trailer, you really don’t know what game it is. You hear the word car combat and assume but you are still not sure. Then you slowly start to hear an ice cream truck, that is the moment you know and you freak out. I don’t want to spoil what happens next but watch for yourselves. After the intro they show off some crazy awesome, classic Twisted Metal gameplay. This is a great way to end the show.

With everything Sony showed off, did they steal the show for you? I think they did great, even with the few odd, boring parts. They had truly epic parts that make this show full of win for me.

  1. Rhuno Said,

The Butler was totally awesome and I’m super excited about FF 14, though I’ll be snagging that on PC. I thought Sony did pretty good; Twisted Metal looks great, but I wish they would’ve showed something on Uncharted 3. Oh well, that could just mean they’re holding out on some of the big announcements for other shows like TGS.

  2. Eric Said,

Wow! The Little Big Planet 2 interview and hands-on footage has me all kinds of excited! Sounds like the possibilities with the game are endless. Definitely picking this one up. In the mean time… Little Big Planet 1 here I come!
