Price of XBox LIVE Leveling Up

by Ryan On August - 31 - 2010

Microsoft recently announced that starting November 1, 2010 they will be raising the price for Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions. The price will increase from the current $49.99/year to $59.99/year. The company has stated that they have continued to add value to the package since launching in 2002 and with the new upcoming services such as the ESPN deal, they feel the new price is fair.

Microsoft’s Major Nelson issued the following statement regarding the price hike:

Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.

However, we do want to thank our loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount, so now would be a good time to renew your subscription.

The ten dollar increase raises the monthly price of XBL from $4.16 to $5.00 which isn’t a huge deal, but it does seem like an odd move when you consider that many of XBox LIVE’s features are available for free on the PS3 including online play, Netflix and soon Hulu.

What do you think? Do the features of XBox LIVE still warrant the price for you?

You can head over to Amazon now to lock in the cheaper subscription.

  1. EvilPaul Said,

I don’t think the price is a that bad if you use all the features. I wonder how many people only use it for the multiplayer games. If that is most people, it sucks for them because it is free on the PS3 and the $10 doesn’t give them more if they don’t use care for most the features.

I personally only use it for multiplayer and netflix, most of the other stuff doesn’t appeal to me so it kind of sucks but something everyone will have to deal with.

  2. Paul Said,

I canceled my XBox Live a year ago due to poor customer service at MS (really poor). Never missed it. I’m glad to see them raise prices because I want them to run more of their customers off. Step outside, my brothers. The air is fresh.

I don’t really think the price is too bad, but I do think it sucks that you have to pay for multiplayer gaming in the first place. Most of the features of XBL are now available on PSN for free. That said I’m going to keep my subscription because all my friends are on Live. Also, Halo.
