PrE3 2010: Sony

by Paul On June - 5 - 2010

We have already posted our thoughts on how E3 will be for Nintendo and now it is Sony’s turn.

There are 2 major things that Sony will for sure hit on during the show, 3D and PlayStation Move(Sony’s motion controller). Whether or not you want these things to invade your PS3, it is what all the major companies are doing these days. Even though 3D won’t reach many people yet, it isn’t that challenging to do from a technical stand point and when 3D is more wide spread, Sony will be dominating in this part of the industry. PlayStation Move will probably be about 50% of everything being shown, they are going to want to push this as much as they can. Few games have been officially announced that use the PS Move so there will be many games with Move support revealed; let’s hope we don’t get ported Wii games. LittleBigPlanet 2 has strongly hinted at using the Move and even had a tech demo of the first game using the Move.

The main controller for the PlayStation Move.

Now onto what most of us gamers want to hear about, the hardcore PS3 games. Sony has had a hard time in the last few years keeping their secrets and this year already has some leaks and strong rumors. Resistance 3 was seen on a billboard a long time ago and this is the time they would probably announce it. Infamous 2 was just announced and Killzone 3 should have some sweet video showing off its prettiness. A LittleBigPlanet 2 trailer was released not long ago so they will for sure touch on that. As for Gran Turismo 5, it is almost guaranteed a release date will be talked about, it has been in production for so long and Gran Turismo is one of the biggest franchises Sony has. Every game has sold multiple millions, GT3 was almost 8 million. In some recent interviews about GT5, it was said that the delays were because of the Move. I’m Pretty sure GT5 will be out this year, possibly launching the same day the Move comes out.

Gran Turismo 5, probably the best looking game to date.

On the PSP side I don’t think we will get anything too crazy. Even though a new DS is going to be announced, I think Sony is too focused on the PS3 to launch a new portable system. More than likely a nice, feature-filled firmware update but that is about it. Sony will show off the new God of War: Ghost of Sparta for sure. There may be a Patapon announcement and also some portable versions of PS3 games. The PSP is kind of a guessing game.

Another major rumor that is likely to happen is the premium version of the PSN. If Sony announced this with some good premium features, it could make the PSN really killer. This change will probably be accompanied by a new firmware so these features can be implemented. One rumor is a free PSN game every month. This would be crazy awesome, help smaller devs get their games out there and spread more games by word of mouth. I think the PSN has the best downloadable games lineup compared to the other systems by far. I think most of Sony’s surprises will be in the form of new PSN games but this is definitely not a bad thing.

I think many gamers are hoping to see an appearance by Kevin Butler. Probably the best advertising campaign since the guy dressed in the Crash Bandicoot suit – by the way…he was amazing, booya grandma!

The PS3 already has a very impressive lineup of known games that will be shown. If Sony pulls off some good Move games and throws in some surprises, they could easily steal the show.

Below is a simple list of some Sony E3 2010 speculations and what I personally expect or don’t expect.

GT5 release date
PlayStation Move release date
Tons of Move compatible games
Resistance 3 announced
Premium PSN announced and release date. Wouldn’t be surprised if it launched the same day as the announcement.
No new PSP
PSP Go price drop
Kevin Butler appearance

  1. Rhuno Said,

I’m hoping to see Uncharted 3! Those games are some of my favorites this generation. Also, if Sony is revealing titles like Killzone 3 and Infamous 2 already they may have some HUGE surprises in store as those would have made for some great E3 conference reveals.

    Very interesting.

  2. Erick Said,

Rhuno if there is an Uncharted 3 I might break down and cry. For the simple fact I haven’t even finish the second installment and I keep hearing about how awesome it is. For what I’ve heard so far about Killzone 3 is that it pretty much looks like Killzone 2. Which in that case doesn’t bug me at all and I’m sure they’re tighten up the controls as well.

I’m thinking that the Sony Move is already to late to make an impact on what the Nintendo Wii done already. However I can see FPS games and 3rd Person shooters using the Move controller. I could care less for playing mini games on the PS3. Why? Because I’m a man and when I want to feel like a kid I fire up the Wii and eat cereal.

What I really want to see is FFXIII Vs and I’ve always hoped for a FFVII remake. Also I want a good FPS game that was built around the Move controller from the ground up. I know I’m asking for to much at this point. I’m placing my bet on Sony this year however Nintendo could throw a few shockers out there.
