Nintendo: Apple is the Enemy

by Ryan On May - 8 - 2010

Nintendo has officially declared this console war over and has named itself the victor. Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, called out Sony specifically as being defeated and named a new adversary: Apple. According to reports, Iwata made the statement to “senior executives” within the company and claimed that Apple is “the enemy of the future.”

This actually is a pretty accurate statement given where Nintendo’s at these days. I’m not sure I’d say they “defeated” Sony, but instead just went after a different market; an effort which has brought the company huge success in terms of sales and profit. However, newer reports indicate that Apple is starting to get their hands in Nintendo’s pockets. For the first time in six years, Nintendo’s profits are down and it looks like the iPhone/iPad may be the cause and it isn’t hard to see why; both companies are catering to the casual market. The people playing Wii Sports and Wii Fit are the same people playing Bejeweled on the iPhone and with the phone having the edge in terms of both portability (DS) and functionality (Wii) those consumers are starting to drift away from the Nintendo platforms.

Whether you agree or not; it should be interesting to see what happens between Nintendo and Apple in the coming years.
