Modern Court Room Warfare
You’ve no doubt heard about the legal falling out between developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision, but now there’s a new twist. The two fired Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella are suing Activision claiming a breach of contract.
The two men were fired just before they were set to receive a sizable royalty payment from the publishing giant. Activision cited “insubordination” and a “breach of fiduciary duty” as their reasons for ousting the pair. This action was perhaps poor timing on Activision’s part as now the two are suing to get what they claim is rightfully their money, or as Vince Zampella simply put it, “We shouldn’t have to sue to get paid.”
West had a bit more to say on the subject stating “We were shocked by Activision’s decision to terminate our contract. We poured our heart and soul into that company, building not only a world class development studio, but assembling a team we’ve been proud to work with for nearly a decade. We think the work we’ve done speaks for itself.”
It’s hard to disagree with West; the Modern Warfare games have been some of the most successful titles of this generation with MW 2 shattering records across the board. The quality of the games is highly evident, and while we certainly don’t know the whole story here, it does seem a bit unwise for Activision to attack one of its most successful studio partners.
Hopefully they win and get their money back, or even better they get their jobs back and make even more bad ass games!
